Puglia is the heel of the boot in Italy offering a coastline of pristine white sand beaches and an interior of rolling hills with olive orchards, vineyards, sheep and quaint villages, including the ancient cave town of Matera, baroque Lecce and the trulli houses of Alberobello.
Puglia has many small villages that can be experienced at a leisurely pace. The UNESCO Sassi of Matera, village center built on top of ancient cave dwellings, including the church with 13th century cave paintings of biblical stories.The Trulli of Alberobello is a charming UNESCO site of prehistoric round white houses with conical roofs.

Puglia has been a agricultural region of over a millennia with durum wheat, fava beans, fennel, tomatoes, etc. It is also nourished by abundant seafood. The pasta specialty, orrechiette or small ear-shapped shells are produced by hand.

Local bus transport to Matera is 1.24 hour. We will meet our local guide and have a 4 hour walking experience in Matera, with stops for refreshments if needed. The Sassi di Matera has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site because of the ancient cave churches and houses dating back many centuries. The paintings on the walls of the cave churches from the medieval time period are wonderful.
