Discover Puglia, Italy - the "heel of the boot"

Explore ancient villages of Matera, Alberobello and Lecce.

Your slow odyssey will expore Puglia's sun kissed villages along the Adriatic and Ionian seas and complex cultural history. Puglia has some of the most unique architecture in Europe, including the trulli houses of Alberobello and cave homes in Matera, both UNESCO sites. Puglia is known as the breadbasket of Italy, producing more olive oil than any other region and many other agricultural products.

Puglia is the heel of the boot in Italy offering a coastline of pristine white sand beaches and an interior of rolling hills with olive orchards, vineyards, sheep and quaint villages, including the ancient cave town of Matera, baroque Lecce and the trulli houses of Alberobello.

UNESCO Villages of Puglia

Puglia has many small villages that can be experienced at a leisurely pace. The UNESCO Sassi of Matera, village center built on top of ancient cave dwellings, including the church with 13th century cave paintings of biblical stories.The Trulli of Alberobello is a charming UNESCO site of prehistoric round white houses with conical roofs.

For us to go to Italy and to penetrate into Italy is like a most fascinating act of self-discovery.

The ancient Sassi of Matera, originally settled during the paleolithic area, is a UNESCO world heritage site consisting of houses, churches, monasteries and hermitages built into the caves of the canyon landscape. It is a magical adventure in itself to walk up and down the labyrinth of stone streets in this amazing part of Italy.

Culinary Traditions of Puglia

Puglia has been a agricultural region of over a millennia with durum wheat, fava beans, fennel, tomatoes, etc. It is also nourished by abundant seafood. The pasta specialty, orrechiette or small ear-shapped shells are produced by hand.

You may have the universe, if I may have Italy.

Odyssey Includes

Cost includes lodging, land transportation, ferry transport, all breakfasts, meals as indicated in itinerary, gentle early morning chair yoga and meditation when time and setting are appropriate, odyssey guides- Char Selsvold, local guides, entrance fees. Small group experience, max 10 people.

Cost does not include alcoholic beverages, travel insurance, taxi/shuttle/train transport to and from airport to B&B, airline transport.

Welcoming and orientation. We will do a walk in the vicinity of our lodging to indicate some of the cafes for an afternoon cappuccino or glass of wine and where the ATM is. Overnight-Bari
A local guide will take on you on half-day walking experience to the ancient streets of the port city of Bari, the capital and largest city in Puglia. He will introduce you to the local people, future and traditions, The Byzantine empire ruled here for 500 years and you can see the influence in the architecture. You will walk through the charming Bari Vecchia or old town with many historical sites, and enjoy a walk on the seafront promenade. Overnight-Bari, B,L

Local bus transport to Matera is 1.24 hour. We will meet our local guide and have a 4 hour walking experience in Matera, with stops for refreshments if needed. The Sassi di Matera has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site because of the ancient cave churches and houses dating back many centuries. The paintings on the walls of the cave churches from the medieval time period are wonderful. On you 4 hour walking experience, you will be taken on a labyrinth of streets that go through the village perched on a large canyon. The views are spectacular. Overnight-Bari, B,L

Transfer by mini-bus to the fairytale village of Alberobello, 1 hour ride. Our local guide will lead you a walking experience past the iconic conical roofed houses or “trulli” of Alberobello. There are over 1000 “trulli” in this UNESCO world heritage site. Learn about how they were built in the 1400s with a mortar-less architectural technique. Puglia produces 40% of Italy’s olive oil. You have the opportunity to do an olive oil tasting after the walk. Overnight-Bari, B,L
We will travel by train to the charming Baroque village of Lecce, 1 hr 20 min., Our local guide will guide you on a journey back in time, where you learn history of the area as well sample a wide variety of the tasty street food. 3 hours Overnight-Lecce, B, L
You will get an authentic culinary experience in Lecce with a local chef. You will learn how to prepare a menu of typical Apulian recipes using fresh produce and raw ingredients sourced from the local market. Bring these recipes home and continue your cooking adventure. Overnight-Lecce, B,
